BLK South Durham Storytelling & Garden Initiative
Underwrite films, podcasts, and community programming that preserve Durham’s historically Black neighborhoods and strengthen connection.
Description
The campaign will accelerate BLK South’s time-sensitive work to strengthen historically Black neighborhoods in Durham through community-centered education, storytelling, celebration, and economic empowerment. This moment matters because traditions, lived memory, and community ties can be gathered and shared now—while momentum for collective healing, cultural remembrance, and community ownership can be sustained.
The campaign will unlock a stronger, more connected ecosystem of cultural preservation and neighborhood revitalization rooted in the traditions and future of Black communities in the South. It will produce new documentary films and podcasts that illuminate community stories, alongside cultural programming and convening events that bring Durham together. The initiative will also develop a community garden to create an ongoing space for creative expression, land stewardship, and connection.
Progress will be tracked and reported through clear production and delivery milestones for films and podcasts, and implementation milestones for programming, the garden, and community events. Major donors can underwrite these core elements and stay closely connected through ongoing engagement around milestones and community-facing outcomes.
Why This Moment Matters
This campaign matters now because BLK South is actively building community connection, cultural preservation, and neighborhood revitalization in Durham through time-sensitive, community-centered creative work. The opportunity is to strengthen historically Black neighborhoods through education, storytelling, celebration, and economic empowerment while traditions, lived memory, and community ties can be gathered and shared.
If donors wait, the initiative risks losing momentum for collective healing, cultural remembrance, and community ownership efforts that depend on sustained resources to produce documentary films and podcasts and to develop cultural programming and events that bring the Durham community together.
