About LITERACY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) is a San Francisco–based nonprofit (founded in the late 1990s) that works with Bayview–Hunters Point and surrounding neighborhoods to restore local ecology, build community stewardship, and provide green workforce pathways for youth and young adults. LEJ operates hands-on programs including a native plant nursery, Eco-Apprentice/paid internship tracks, school and community-based environmental education, and habitat restoration projects in partnership with local agencies and parks. The organization emphasizes culturally relevant curriculum, indigenous and ethnobotanical knowledge, and project-based learning to advance environmental justice and healthier local ecosystems. In recent years LEJ has expanded its native plant nursery and continued partnerships with California State Parks and local agencies to support shoreline restoration, youth workforce development, and increased community access to open space and stewardship opportunities.
