About SAFEhouse for the Performing Arts (SAFEhouse Arts)

SAFEhouse for the Performing Arts (often styled SAFEhouse Arts) is a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that incubates new performing art by providing rehearsal and presentation opportunities, residencies, mentorship, and production support. Its core programs include RAW (Resident Artist Workshop), AIRspace (a long-running queer artists residency program the organization produces), and the West Wave Dance Festival; the organization also produces periodic community events and showcases in the Tenderloin and across San Francisco. In recent years SAFEhouse has remained active as a presenting and residency organization (including returning RAW performances and festival programming) and continued to report organizational finances in its publicly filed Form 990s (most recently for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023).

Notable achievements

RAW residency scale

The RAW (Resident Artist Workshop) program has provided free rehearsal and performance support to hundreds of Bay Area artists and ensembles since its founding; the program has supported more than 800 groups over its lifetime and remains a central vehicle for new work development.

Stewardship of AIRspace

SAFEhouse produces AIRspace, a historic residency program for queer performing artists; SAFEhouse’s stewardship preserved and continued this longstanding queer residency, helping ensure continuity for LGBTQA+ performance makers in the Bay Area.

Regional festival and grant support

SAFEhouse produces the West Wave Dance Festival and, as a recognized arts organization, has received project support from public funders (including a California Arts Council Impact Projects award in the 2020–21 cycle) to support community arts programming in San Francisco.
