About SAN FRANCISCO NEIGHBORHOOD THEATER FOUNDATION
The San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation (EIN 02-0609916) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving and operating historic movie theaters across San Francisco. The organization owns the Vogue Theatre and manages leases for the Balboa Theatre and Opera Plaza Cinema, and it works with theater operators, property owners, and city agencies to advance preservation and community use. In recent years SFNTF has been active in helping neighborhood cinemas resume full operations after pandemic closures: the Foundation announced multiple theater reopenings in Spring 2022 and continues to support partner operators and programming. Tax filings show a major inflow of contributions in fiscal year 2021 and more modest operating revenues in 2023–2024; as of the 2024 filing the organization reported roughly $0.54 million in total assets. SFNTF is also a public-facing presenter and community organizer: it produces the Mostly British Film Festival, established the Film Night in the Park / Sundown Cinema outdoor series (later merged operationally with the San Francisco Parks Alliance), and supports local programming that keeps neighborhood theaters active and accessible.
Notable achievements
Vogue Theatre acquisition & restoration
Led a capital campaign to purchase and renovate the historic Vogue Theatre; the Foundation reports having invested more than $1.5 million in the Vogue and other neighborhood cinemas to preserve them as operating movie houses.
Balboa Theatre lease and modernization
Secured and maintained the lease for the Balboa Theatre, supported a community-backed digital conversion (more than 1,000 supporters contributed), and facilitated the theater’s return to regular neighborhood movie programming.
Founded and scaled outdoor film programming
Established Film Night in the Park (Sundown Cinema) in 2003 and produced it through 2018, helping the series reach more than 150,000 attendees over time; the program later merged operations with the San Francisco Parks Alliance so the series could continue citywide.
