About HAIGHT ASHBURY COMMUNITY NURSERY SCHOOL
Haight Ashbury Community Nursery School (HACNS) is a parent-run cooperative 501(c)(3) preschool founded in 1974 and based at the Grattan Playground/Clubhouse in the Cole Valley/Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco. The school serves children roughly ages 2½–5 with a play-based program that emphasizes imaginative play, outdoor exploration, art, music, and community building.
HACNS is run by a volunteer parent membership with a governing board and a licensed director-led classroom model; parents contribute weekly workdays, monthly jobs, maintenance days, and fundraising to keep tuition low and the program accessible. In recent years the school has marked its 50th anniversary, announced a leadership transition after a long-term director tenure, and planned program expansions (including a full-day option for the 2026–27 year).
