About HOUSTON BOTANIC GARDEN

Houston Botanic Garden (HBG) is a nonprofit public botanic garden serving the Houston region from a 132-acre site along Sims Bayou. The Garden opened to the public on September 18, 2020 and presents curated display gardens, restored native ecosystems, and interpretive programs designed for education, conservation, and public enjoyment. HBG operates year-round display gardens (including the Global Collection Garden, Culinary Garden, Susan Garver Family Discovery Garden, Stormwater Wetlands, and Coastal Prairie), offers a broad slate of adult and youth education programs and field trips, and manages living collections for research, stewardship, and community engagement. In recent years HBG has published audited financial statements and continued development of Phase I facilities while preparing programmatic and capital plans for subsequent phases.

Notable achievements

Phase I completion and public opening (2020)

HBG transformed a former municipal golf course and opened to the public on September 18, 2020. Phase I delivered roughly 25 acres of developed gardens and supporting infrastructure including the Global Collection Garden, Culinary Garden, Susan Garver Family Discovery Garden, Woodland Glade, Pine Grove, Coastal Prairie, Stormwater Wetlands, a community garden, visitor amenities, and event spaces.

Extensive living collections (~1,100+ plant taxa)

The Garden maintains a diverse living collection of over one thousand plant taxa across year-round display gardens and native areas, including concentrated collections in the Global Collection Garden and curated displays that highlight edible, medicinal, and regionally significant plants.

Active education & ecosystem stewardship programs

HBG runs a full schedule of educational offerings (school field trips, hands-on youth classes, adult horticulture workshops, citizen science and interpretive programming) and has developed functioning ecological infrastructure—stormwater wetlands and a coastal prairie—that provide habitat while demonstrating flood-mitigation and conservation practices to visitors and student groups.
