About AFRICAN AMERICAN HEALTH INSTITUTE (Grand Rapids African American Health Institute — GRAAHI)
The Grand Rapids African American Health Institute (commonly branded as GRAAHI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2002 that works to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities in Grand Rapids and West Michigan. The organization advances health equity through community-facing programs, workforce development, research (including a Health Equity Index), policy advocacy, and culturally aligned health education. GRAAHI operates multiple community programs and initiatives — including Pathways to Healthcare Careers (scholarships and workforce pipelines), mental- and maternal-health initiatives, community health events (Rhythm Run & Health Fair, Fit Jam, blood drives, and a Sickle Cell Walk), and the annual Transformational Health Summit — and publishes research and policy reports to inform local health systems and policymakers. The organization’s EIN (06-1658200) and tax-exempt status have been verified against public nonprofit records and nonprofit data sources, and GRAAHI maintains an active web presence and ongoing program activity across 2023–2025.
