About CLEAN GRID ALLIANCE

Clean Grid Alliance is a Minneapolis-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works across the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) footprint to accelerate deployment of wind, solar, and energy storage through technical analysis, regulatory intervention, and public education. The organization traces its roots to Wind on the Wires (founded 2001), rebranded as Clean Grid Alliance in 2018, and operates as a membership and funder-supported policy and technical advocacy organization serving renewable energy developers, communities, and other stakeholders across the Midwest. In the last 2–3 years Clean Grid Alliance has been active in major regional transmission and interconnection proceedings (including public support for the Cardinal–Hickory Creek transmission project), expanded its organizational structure to support advocacy, and continued to grow operations with multi-million-dollar annual revenues reported on its most recent IRS filings.

Notable achievements

Supported Cardinal–Hickory Creek approval

Played a public and technical role in multi-party efforts that celebrated state court and regulatory approvals for the Cardinal–Hickory Creek transmission project (2023), a final MISO Multi-Value Project critical to enabling gigawatts of Midwest renewable generation.

Two decades of regional impact / rebrand

Originating as Wind on the Wires in 2001, the organization rebranded to Clean Grid Alliance in 2018 and marked 20 years of work shaping Midwest renewable markets through transmission planning, policy interventions, and stakeholder partnerships.

Expanded advocacy structure (Clean Grid Association)

Established an affiliated 501(c)(6) (Clean Grid Association) in 2023 to broaden member-facing advocacy and industry engagement while maintaining the 501(c)(3)'s technical and public-interest programs.
