About NAMI Urban Los Angeles
NAMI Urban Los Angeles (NULA) is the urban affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness serving Los Angeles communities. Founded in 2003, the organization provides peer-led support groups, evidence-based education (Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, NAMI Basics), public education, and advocacy focused on reducing stigma and improving access to care. In the last 2–3 years NAMI Urban LA has maintained and expanded virtual and in-person programming in English and Spanish, sustained specialty family support (including for families of people involved in the criminal justice system), and marked a 20th anniversary milestone in 2023 that highlighted its community impact and longevity.
Notable achievements
20th Anniversary (2023)
Celebrated two decades of local service with a 20th anniversary documentary and community highlights that showcased the affiliate’s sustained outreach, volunteer leadership, and local impact since its 2003 founding.
Expanded virtual programming
Established and sustained a broad slate of virtual and hybrid offerings (peer support groups, Family Support Groups, classes in English and Spanish) to increase access across the service area; the affiliate advertises approximately 19 distinct programs and regular recurring support group meetings.
Evidence-based education & family support
Regularly delivers core NAMI curricula (Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, NAMI Basics, In Our Own Voice) and specialty family support for criminal-justice-impacted families, strengthening caregiver skills and peer recovery in underserved neighborhoods.
