About Writers Room Inc (The Writers Room)

Founded by writers for writers in 1978, The Writers Room is a nonprofit urban writers’ colony and one of the nation’s earliest shared writing workspaces. It operates a landmark penthouse workspace in Manhattan that is dedicated entirely to the creation of literature in all forms. The organization offers membership-based, subsidized 24/7 access to quiet desks, high-speed internet, storage, and a small kitchen-lounge while also hosting readings, member spotlights, and other literary events. Members have produced substantial published work and performances while using the Room. The Writers Room maintains active public filings and continues regular programming and membership services; in the past 2–3 years it has remained operational, welcomed public events and readings, and continued to receive foundation and public support to underwrite low-cost membership and day-to-day operations.
