About LAWYERS COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR POLICY INC

Founded in 1981, the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy (LCNP) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) educational association of lawyers and legal scholars that provides legal and policy analysis aimed at the abolition of nuclear weapons and stronger compliance with international law. LCNP serves as the UN office of the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA), regularly submits legal analyses and statements to UN and treaty deliberations (including NPT and TPNW processes), and organizes conferences, briefings, and publications for policymakers, diplomats, civil society, and the media. In the last three years LCNP has remained active with policy reports, public statements, and conferences — for example organizing a November 8, 2023 conference on nuclear weapons and international law and publishing research and advocacy material (including a May 2024 report on missile and strategic procurement risks) — while maintaining a small staff and board of experienced legal professionals and scholars.

Notable achievements

UN/TPNW and NPT advocacy

Sustained legal advocacy and formal submissions at United Nations forums and treaty processes (NPT review contexts and Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons discussions), representing legal positions that have informed international disarmament debates.

Participation in Marshall Islands legal effort

Provided expert legal analysis and personnel involvement connected to the Marshall Islands’ legal initiatives challenging nuclear-armed states, contributing subject-matter expertise used in international legal proceedings and briefs.

Recent research and public programming

Produced policy reports and public events in the past three years — including a May 2024 report on strategic missile procurement risks and a November 8, 2023 conference on 'Nuclear Weapons and International Law' — used to brief policymakers, academics, and civil society.
