About THE SHAKESPEARE CENTER OF LOS ANGELES INC

The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles (SCLA) is an operating 501(c)(3) theater and arts-education organization (EIN confirmed as 13-3167013) that produces professional Shakespearean and related works while delivering sustained arts education and workforce-development programs for underserved youth, military veterans, and returning citizens. In the last 2–3 years SCLA has advanced a multi-year Comprehensive Campaign to renovate and expand its downtown Los Angeles facility (groundbreaking May 25, 2024), continued touring and mainstage productions, and maintained signature programs — Will Power After-School, Will Power to Schools, Student Matinees, and Veterans in Art — while operating offsite during construction. The organization reports active fundraising and public-sector partnerships to complete a 300-seat multimedia theater and training campus planned to reopen for year-round programming in 2026.

Notable achievements

Comprehensive Campaign & Groundbreaking (May 25, 2024)

Broke ground on a multi-year capital project to transform its downtown facility into a 22,000 sq. ft., 300-seat multimedia theater, training labs, and community spaces; the campaign has secured more than $18 million to date and phases of construction are scheduled through 2025–2026.

The Tempest: An Immersive Experience (2023)

Produced an immersive staging of The Tempest (March–April 2023) comprising roughly 30 performances (including student matinees); the production was named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the top nine Los Angeles theater offerings for 2023.

Sustained Workforce & Education Programs

Continued operation and expansion of signature programs: Will Power After-School (paid arts employment for youth ages 14–24), Will Power to Schools (teacher professional development and Title 1 student matinees), and Veterans in Art (paid vocational training for veterans). As part of its capital plan, SCLA projects delivering tens of thousands of subsidized student and veteran tickets and hundreds of arts-based workforce placements over the next seven years.
