About GREENWICH VILLAGE ORCHESTRA LTD

The Greenwich Village Orchestra (GVO) is a volunteer community symphony orchestra founded in 1986 and based in New York City. It presents multi-concert seasons (September–June), family-friendly programs, summer outdoor performances, and an annual Young Artists competition.

GVO remains actively performing and programming into the mid-2020s, celebrating its 40th anniversary season in 2026 and staging recent seasons that include New York premieres, collaborations with notable soloists, community family concerts with instrument “petting zoos,” and outdoor appearances in city parks.

Notable achievements

New York premiere (co-commission)

Co-commissioned and presented the New York premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff’s Double Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon (performance returned to the stage in 2022 after pandemic delays).

Sustained multi-decade programming

Operated continuously since 1986 with multi-concert seasons, exceeding three decades of community concerts, commissioning activity, and educational family events.

Young Artists program & community outreach

Runs a Young Artists competition that spotlights emerging soloists with winners performing with the orchestra, and produces family concerts and free/park performances to broaden access to classical music.
