About Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, Inc.
Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, Inc. (FOCA) is a volunteer, donor-supported 501(c)(3) based in Dobbs Ferry, NY that advocates for, stewards, and interprets the 41-mile Old Croton Aqueduct historic greenway. The organization operates the Keeper’s House visitor center, publishes maps and guides, and runs public programming including guided walks, cleanups, and community events. Founded and tax-exempt in 1990, FOCA partners with New York State Parks and New York City agencies to fund and carry out conservation and preservation projects (stone wall repair, invasive plant removal, trail signage and step reconstruction), runs educational outreach for families and schools, and maintains an active calendar of events and volunteer stewardship work in the last several years.
Notable achievements
Keeper’s House restoration
Led the multi-year rehabilitation of the 1840s Keeper’s House in Dobbs Ferry (rehabilitation completed in 2016), returning the building to use as FOCA’s visitor center and exhibition space and preserving an important historic asset.
Native-plant restoration
Commissioned and implemented invasive-plant removal and native-planting work along the trail, removing more than two tons of invasive species and planting over 500 native plants to restore habitat and trail ecology.
Trail infrastructure & access improvements
Designed, fundraised for, and rebuilt a hazardous trail section (Cedar and Main steps) to improve safety and accessibility; also funded and installed wayfinding signage and supported projects that improved trail connections (including work related to the High Bridge reopening).
