About VISUAL AIDS FOR THE ARTS INC

Visual AIDS (legal name Visual Aids for the Arts, Inc.; EIN 13-3621169) is a New York–based 501(c)(3) arts organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS awareness, advocacy, and the preservation of work by artists living with HIV.

The organization produces exhibitions, public programs, commissions, and an Artist Registry and Archive, while offering Artist Support Grants and digitization grants to sustain the creative practice and legacy of HIV+ artists.

In recent years Visual AIDS expanded its Artist Support Grant program (2023), continued international distribution of its annual Day With(out) Art video commissions (including the 2024 program), and advanced archival and digitization projects and institutional partnerships with major museums and arts funders.

Notable achievements

Day With(out) Art — long-running international program

Founded in 1989, Visual AIDS coordinates the annual Day With(out) Art program; recent commissions (for example the 2024 video program) were distributed and screened at 100+ venues worldwide, sustaining a global platform for art, memorialization, and HIV awareness.

Expanded Artist Support Grants

The Artist Support Grant program was restructured beginning in 2023 to provide broader, unrestricted support and digitization assistance; since the program began Visual AIDS has distributed substantial direct support to artists living with HIV (totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars).

Archival and publication work

Visual AIDS operates a significant Artist Registry and Archive, issues publications and resource guides, and has advanced digitization initiatives to preserve audiovisual and ephemera collections related to artists with HIV/AIDS.
