About BREAK A LEG PRODUCTIONS INC

Break A Leg Productions, Inc. (BAL) is a New York–based 501(c)(3) theatre organization founded in the mid-1990s that develops, stages and promotes new plays and short dramatic/video works for diverse audiences.

BAL runs multiple reading series (The Art of Science, Historically Speaking, Delicious Comedy, Unexplored Territory), annual events such as the One Act Slam, and short video festivals; the company emphasizes fully rehearsed staged readings followed by talkbacks to support playwright development and audience engagement.

The company is led by Artistic Director Teri Black and a volunteer/part-time leadership team and maintains membership in theatre networks to support production and playwright opportunities, including helping some works reach further productions outside the company’s initial presentations.

Notable achievements

Longstanding new-play incubator (since 1995)

BAL has operated for more than 25 years developing new plays and giving playwrights early-stage production-quality readings that include costumes, props and post-performance talkbacks, building a steady program of development activity since its founding.

Annual One Act Slam — community-driven prize

BAL’s One Act Slam is a recurring, audience-voted competition that showcases unpublished short plays and awards cash prizes to winning playwrights, providing performance exposure and direct audience feedback.

Expanded digital festivals and external transfers

Since 2021 BAL has produced regular short-video festivals (Love Festival, Hope Springs Eternal) and supported new works that have gone on to additional productions, including at least one title noted as produced internationally after an early BAL presentation.
