About ALPHA WORKSHOPS

Alpha Workshops is a New York–based nonprofit decorative arts studio and licensed vocational training program that trains and employs adults with visible or invisible disabilities, including people living with HIV/AIDS. The organization operates a studio that produces handcrafted wallpapers, textiles, painted papers, decorative finishes and lighting; sales of these products support its training and employment mission.

Founded in 1995 and modeled on historic arts-and-crafts workshops, Alpha combines vocational curricula, on‑the‑job studio practice, and marketplace commissions to prepare students for careers in the decorative arts. In recent years the organization relocated its studios to Brooklyn’s Powerhouse Arts, mounted a major 30th‑anniversary exhibition, and continues to adapt program delivery (the Alpha Workshops Studio School has been temporarily on hiatus while classes and studio activity transition to the new Brooklyn location).

Notable achievements

Relocation to Powerhouse Arts (Gowanus)

Alpha Workshops moved its studios from Manhattan’s Fashion District to new studio space within Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn (April 2024), expanding its presence in the Brooklyn arts community and enabling new collaborations and public programming.

30th‑Anniversary Exhibition

The organization celebrated its 30th anniversary with a major exhibition and public program featuring artist Nancy Lorenz, marking a milestone public-facing program that highlighted student and studio work alongside a prominent contemporary artist.

New Product Lines and Gallery Programs

In the past several years Alpha launched a handmade textile collection and piloted a fine‑arts gallery program for students and graduates, diversifying earned‑income streams and creating additional market opportunities for program participants.
