About UHAB HOUSING DEVELOPMENT FUND CORPORATION
UHAB Housing Development Fund Corporation is a subordinate nonprofit entity affiliated with the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) that takes title to and serves as interim owner/manager of low-income housing projects prior to conversion to limited-equity cooperative ownership (HDFC co-ops). The organization operates as part of UHAB’s wider programmatic work in New York City to organize tenants, develop and sponsor HDFC co-ops, provide technical assistance and training, and administer member services such as bulk insurance and financial programs. UHAB and its related HDFC affiliates have a long history of assisting resident-controlled affordable housing in historically disinvested communities. In recent years UHAB (and related entities) expanded services and program funding: UHAB reports growth in staff and programs in fiscal year 2024, the launch of large municipal contracts to provide free training to HDFCs, energy-efficiency and resiliency initiatives for co-ops, and expanded policy and national technical assistance offerings.
Notable achievements
Preservation and co-op conversions (1,700+ buildings)
Part of UHAB’s long-term portfolio of work includes assisting the preservation or conversion of over 1,700 buildings and creating cooperative homeownership opportunities for tens of thousands of households across New York City since the 1970s.
Large NYC contract to train HDFCs (FY2024)
In fiscal year 2024 UHAB expanded program capacity and launched a multi-million-dollar contract with New York City housing agencies to provide free training and technical assistance to HDFC co-ops across the city, markedly increasing outreach and support to at-risk co-ops.
Significant co-op development financing
Through its co-op development efforts UHAB and its development vehicles have overseen and financed substantial rehabilitation and development activity (hundreds of millions in total development financing across projects), enabling permanent financing and cooperative conversion for numerous buildings.
