About PETALUMA BLACKS FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Petaluma Blacks for Community Development (PBCD) is a community-based 501(c)(3) organization that traces its roots to organized activity in Petaluma beginning in 1977 and later formalized as a tax-exempt nonprofit. PBCD’s stated mission is to preserve and share Black history and culture while fostering fellowship and leadership among Black residents and youth in Petaluma and the surrounding Sonoma County area.

PBCD operates cultural and educational programming (including a youth leadership program), annual community events, and public-history activities. In recent years the organization has continued regular public programming—such as community picnics, Black History Month exhibits and youth leadership cohorts—and has partnered with local civic and cultural institutions to increase visibility of local Black history and offer leadership opportunities for teens.

Notable achievements

Grapevine Youth Leadership Program

Operates an intergenerational leadership program for teens that provides leadership training, community service opportunities, and civic engagement experiences for local Black youth.

Long-running community events

Maintains annual public events (including the PBCD Community Picnic and Gospel Hour traditions) that bring together families, celebrate culture, and provide community-building and outreach in Petaluma.

Local history preservation and public programming

Has partnered with local museums and libraries to develop Black History Month exhibits and educational programming that document and share the history of Black residents in Petaluma and Sonoma County.
