About THE PUBLIC TRUST ENVIRONMENTAL LEGAL INSTITUTE OF FLORIDA INC
The Public Trust (also operating as Public Trust for Conservation / Public Trust Environmental Legal Institute of Florida) is a Florida-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that uses legal advocacy, community action, and education to protect Florida’s lands, waters, wildlife, and natural resources. The organization maintains a small legal and conservation staff and a board composed largely of trial lawyers; it pursues Clean Water Act and public-records/Sunshine-Law actions, municipal partnerships, and community-based restoration projects to defend imperiled public resources. In the last several years Public Trust has expanded its on-the-ground Revive initiative (urban greening, tree-planting, community gardens and habitat projects) and has partnered with regional funders to support local restoration and conservation efforts.
Notable achievements
City settlement to strengthen urban forestry
Negotiated a settlement with the City of Jacksonville that strengthened municipal urban-forestry practices and enabled a long-term program of large-scale tree planting (the organization reports this settlement will catalyze millions in future tree-planting investments).
Clean Water Act litigation and compliance monitoring
Has brought Clean Water Act actions and enforcement-oriented litigation (including suits against municipal and industrial dischargers) to stop or reduce sewage and polluted stormwater discharges into the St. Johns River and other local waterways, and continues routine monitoring of permit compliance.
Revive initiative — neighborhood greening projects
Launched the Revive initiative to restore and create public green space in Northeast Florida; early projects include designing and planting a butterfly garden and trees at Huguenot Memorial Park, streetscape/tree plantings at Sulzbacher Village, and design/construction of features at Tide Views Preserve, as well as support for a New Town community urban-farm project.
