About BIKE KITCHEN

The Bike Kitchen is a long-running, volunteer-operated community bike workshop in San Francisco that teaches bicycle repair through weekly open-shop hours, classes, and one-on-one assistance. It provides access to tools, used parts at below-market rates, and runs donation-driven bike sales to keep bikes and parts in circulation. In recent years the Bike Kitchen has continued regular programs and reported renewed fundraising and program revenue growth (most recent filings show fiscal-year activity through 2024), maintained a significant asset base for a small community nonprofit, and continued sharing its membership/management tools (Freehub) with other community bike shops to support peer organizations.

Notable achievements

2024 financial growth and sustainability

Reported increased revenue and strengthened balance-sheet metrics in most-recent filings (fiscal activity through 2024), reflecting expanded fundraising and program support that allowed continued operations and program delivery.

Developed and shared Freehub system

Produced and shared the Freehub membership/visit-tracking system used to manage patrons and support data-driven operations, a tool adopted by the Bike Kitchen and made available to other community bike shops.
