About American Pediatric Society (AMERICAN PEDIATRIC SOCIETY INC)

The American Pediatric Society (APS) is a longstanding learned society founded in 1888 that brings together senior leaders in academic pediatrics to advance child and adolescent health through research, education, mentorship, and policy engagement. APS advances its mission through awards and career-development programs, partnerships (including its association with the journal Pediatric Research and participation in the Pediatric Policy Council), annual activities at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) meeting, and targeted advocacy work. John Howland Award (annual highest honor)

APS continues to present the prestigious John Howland Award to leaders who have made distinguished contributions to pediatrics; recent presentations (including the 2025 recipient) demonstrate the Society’s ongoing role in recognizing and promoting major advances in child health.

David G. Nichols Health Equity Award (endowment & recipients)

APS established and administers the David G. Nichols Health Equity Award (endowed by the American Board of Pediatrics Foundation) to recognize outstanding work advancing child and adolescent health equity; recent recipients include leaders recognized in 2024 and 2025 for measurable impact in research, advocacy, and mentoring.

Issue of the Year — Youth in Custody initiative (2023–2024)

APS used its Issue of the Year to mobilize scholarship and action on improving access to quality healthcare for incarcerated youth, producing commentaries in its journal, convening interdisciplinary meetings, piloting educational programs (including an APS–SPR mini‑Gordon session), and rapidly sponsoring trainees to participate at PAS to support workforce development.
