About LegalCORPS

LegalCORPS is Minnesota’s only business-law legal aid organization, established in 2004 to connect low- and moderate-income entrepreneurs, small businesses, inventors, and small nonprofits with pro bono and low-cost transactional business and intellectual property legal services. The organization operates brief-advice clinics, limited-scope representation, educational workshops, a long-running Inventor Assistance Program (patent pro bono), and targeted outreach programs that partner with locally focused organizations to reach under-resourced communities across Minnesota and nearby states. Recent organizational reporting (fiscal year July 2023–June 2024) shows substantial program growth: staff expansion, thousands of pro bono hours delivered, several thousand clients reached, and targeted new partnerships (including a 2025 initiative with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits) to scale compliance and nonprofit-focused legal assistance as sector demand increases.

Notable achievements

Inventor Assistance Program (patent pro bono)

Operates the first and longest-running patent pro bono program of its kind in the U.S., providing free patent and IP-related services to qualifying inventors across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

20th Anniversary & Program Growth (FY2024)

Marked its 20th anniversary while expanding staff and volunteer capacity; in fiscal 2023–24 LegalCORPS and volunteers delivered multiple thousands of pro bono hours, served thousands of clients through programs, and reported an estimated $2.8M in legal-value investment to clients.

Nonprofit Legal Help Desk Partnership (2025)

Launched a partnership with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits to provide a help desk, compliance assessments, resource library, and compliance clinics to smaller nonprofits facing funding cuts and increased regulatory/legal scrutiny.
