About MINNESOTA EYE FOUNDATION

The Minnesota Eye Foundation (MEF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2005 by a group of ophthalmologists to support charitable outreach and professional education in vision care. The organization operates The Vision Project, which arranges medically necessary eye surgeries and related care at no cost for eligible uninsured, low-income patients through volunteer clinical teams. MEF also runs continuing education for optometrists through its long-standing "Perspectives in Eye Care" program (COPE-accredited) and produces community fundraising events such as the Strides 4 Sight 5K to support patient services and education. MEF remains active online and in the community, scheduling in-person and virtual education events (for example, Perspectives in Eye Care is listed for May 18, 2026) and maintaining ongoing patient assistance programs.

Notable achievements

470+ Sight-saving Procedures

Since 2005 volunteer surgeons affiliated with MEF have performed more than 470 procedures, including cataract, glaucoma, and complex corneal surgeries, through the foundation’s patient assistance program.

Annual Free Care to Dozens of Patients

The Vision Project assists approximately 30–35 uninsured, low-income individuals each year, covering evaluations, surgery, immediate postoperative visits, and short-term medications — a level of care that represents an estimated financial impact of more than $75,000 per year compared with self-pay rates.

COPE-accredited Professional Education

MEF has hosted the Perspectives in Eye Care continuing-education program for optometrists (providing up to eight COPE credits), supporting clinician training and practice updates through live and virtual formats.
