SPRING POINT PROJECT
Spring Point Project works to improve the lives of people with Type 1 diabetes by providing a virtually unlimited supply of medical-grade, high-health pigs to serve as safe islet cell donors for research and clinical translation.
About SPRING POINT PROJECT
Spring Point Project (founded 2004) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates a biosecure Source Animal Facility to breed and raise designated pathogen-free (DPF) pigs and to produce clinically suitable porcine tissues for islet xenotransplantation research aimed at curing Type 1 diabetes. The organization supplies DPF, medical‑grade porcine materials and operates on-site cellular manufacturing and quality systems to support preclinical studies and preparation for phase I/II clinical activities. Spring Point Project maintains a donor-facing fundraising presence and public web resources for supporters and families affected by Type 1 diabetes. Recent years have seen continued facility operations, scaled production of DPF animals and porcine islets, and active collaboration with academic and industry partners to enable clinical translation of islet xenotransplantation approaches.
Notable achievements
DPF Herd Production
Produced thousands of designated pathogen-free pigs and supplied large quantities of isolated porcine islets to support preclinical research and clinical preparation, establishing a reliable domestic source of medical‑grade donor tissue for islet xenotransplantation.
Established Source Animal Facility & Cellular Manufacturing
Built and operates a biosecure Source Animal Facility and an on‑site cellular manufacturing capability to raise high‑health pigs and process clinically suitable porcine materials under controlled quality systems.
Support for Clinical Translation
Enabled and supported preclinical programs and early-phase clinical readiness efforts by providing DPF donor animals, tissue supply, and quality documentation used in partnerships with academic and industry collaborators focused on treating Type 1 diabetes.
