THE BRICK
The Brick is a nonprofit visual art space that promotes developments in contemporary culture through exhibitions, publications, and public programs, presenting new commissions and accessible public programming that interrogate key issues of our time.
About THE BRICK
The Brick (formerly LAXART) is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit visual arts organization that commissions and presents contemporary exhibitions, publications, performances, and public programs. Founded in 2005 as LAXART, the organization rebranded and reopened in a larger, purpose-renovated space at 518 N. Western Avenue—expanding its galleries and outdoor courtyard to support institutional-scale projects and community-facing programs (grand opening events occurred in June 2024). Under director Hamza Walker and a professional curatorial team, The Brick mounts thematic group exhibitions, artist retrospectives, and collaborative projects with museums and civic partners while keeping programs free and publicly accessible.
Notable achievements
Rebrand and major relocation
In 2024 LAXART officially rebranded as The Brick and reopened in a renovated 5,000 sq ft facility at 518 N. Western Avenue, more than doubling exhibition capacity and launching a program of inaugural exhibitions and public events.
Sustained programmatic output
Since its founding in 2005 the organization has produced hundreds of projects—solo commissions, thematic group shows, performances, and publications—establishing a track record of commissioning new work and presenting under-recognized artists.
Institutional partnerships and public support
In recent years The Brick has deepened partnerships with major cultural institutions and secured public arts support (including Los Angeles County funding) to mount exhibitions, public programs, and community initiatives.
