About CANYON BACK ALLIANCE
Canyon Back Alliance (CBA) is a small, volunteer-led environmental and trail-access organization based in Los Angeles that advocates for public access to recreational trails and the preservation of open space in the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding areas. The organization engages in land-use advocacy, public-comment campaigns, litigation when necessary, and partnership/fiscal-sponsorship work to support local conservation campaigns. Over the past several years CBA has remained active in local advocacy (including recent coalition campaigns and public comment letters) and has served as a fiscal partner for local conservation fundraising efforts.
Notable achievements
Preservation of 424 acres and two historic trails
CBA played a central role in litigation and negotiations that resulted in a settlement securing two historic trails and permanently protecting 424 acres of open space from development, ensuring long-term public access.
Blocked gating and protected public trail access
Through advocacy and public campaigns CBA successfully opposed efforts to gate or restrict access to established public trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, maintaining recreational access for local residents and visitors.
Ongoing campaign support and fiscal sponsorship
In recent years CBA has supported and acted as a fiscal partner for local conservation campaigns (including efforts to protect Senderos Canyon), enabling grassroots fundraising and legal/advocacy work to proceed under a 501(c)(3) umbrella.
