About Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan

Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to reduce environmental health hazards in housing and protect children’s health through home-based services, education, policy advocacy, and community partnerships. The organization operates programs that screen homes for lead, asthma triggers, moisture and pests, and connects families to interventions, supplies, and repairs. In the last three years the coalition has expanded direct services and community initiatives: it delivered lead-reducing water kits to 35 Kent County families (October 10, 2023), served as a Ready by Five early-childhood service provider using its NIDO screening app, and helped administer the City of Grand Rapids Third Ward Lead Reduction Initiative (distribution of lead-reducing filters and education supported by a $500,000 participatory budget allocation). The organization maintains active partnerships with local health departments and city water systems and engages in statewide advocacy and public education on lead prevention.

Notable achievements

Water kit distribution to Kent County families

In October 2023 the organization distributed lead-reducing water kits (filters, replacement cartridges, reusable bottles, and educational materials) to 35 qualifying Kent County families as part of targeted outreach to reduce water-related lead exposure.

Third Ward Lead Reduction Initiative partner

Served as the City of Grand Rapids implementation partner for the Third Ward Lead Reduction Initiative, organizing direct distribution of lead-reducing filter pitchers, replacement filters, aerator cleaning supplies, educational materials, and optional in-home risk assessments supported by a $500,000 participatory budget allocation.

Expanded early-childhood home screening services

Provides Ready by Five-funded home environmental screenings and interventions for expectant parents and families with children under five, using a proprietary NIDO screening app to deliver free home hazard assessments, supplies, education, and referrals.
