About Hawaii Conservation Alliance Foundation

Hawaii Conservation Alliance Foundation (HCAF) is the fundraising and capacity-building arm of the Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance, founded in 2006 to accelerate place-based, biocultural conservation across the Hawaiian Islands. HCAF supports collaborative programs, statewide convenings, workforce development, and cross-sector initiatives that connect practitioners, communities, and policy-makers to improve native ecosystem outcomes. The Foundation organizes and helps fund the annual Hawai‘i Conservation Conference, publishes status and position reports to inform decision-making, and manages programs that develop conservation practitioners (Conservation Career Compass) and accelerate ahupuaʻa-scale stewardship (Ahupuaʻa Accelerator Initiative). HCAF operates with a statewide network of members and institutional partners and maintains an active web presence and regular public programming.

Notable achievements

Established statewide, sustained convening (Hawai‘i Conservation Conference)

HCAF helps organize the long-running Hawai‘i Conservation Conference, a major annual gathering of conservation professionals, cultural practitioners, researchers, students, and policy makers that shapes statewide conservation priorities and partnerships.

Launched Ahupuaʻa Accelerator Initiative (AAI)

HCAF launched the AAI (est. 2021) to accelerate systems-focused, place-based ahupuaʻa restoration; the initiative produced a 2023 Ahupuaʻa Action Agenda and convened a multi-partner ʻAha in 2024 to catalyze collaborative action across islands.

Built Conservation Career Compass and practitioner supports

HCAF developed and sustained the Conservation Career Compass and related next-gen programs to connect students and emerging professionals with internships, scholarships, and career pathways in natural resources and cultural resource management across Hawai‘i.
