About Houston Audubon Society (doing business as Birds Houston)
Houston Audubon Society, established in 1969 and operating under the trade name Birds Houston, is a regional bird conservation organization that acquires, manages, and restores habitat and delivers education and community programs across the Greater Houston and Upper Texas Coast region. The organization owns and manages a system of wildlife sanctuaries (18 sanctuaries totaling roughly 4,300+ acres), runs community-science and public-engagement programs (including Lights Out for Birds and Houston Bird Week), and participates in regional conservation partnerships and advocacy to protect migratory and resident bird species. In recent years Birds Houston has continued active land protection and sanctuary management (including completing a multi-year conservation puzzle at Bolivar Flats and participating with partners in protection of a 391-acre bottomland tract added to the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge in 2026), updated a 2024–2034 strategic framework, and in August 2026 formally adopted the Birds Houston trade name to better reflect its mission and community focus.
