SAN FRANCISCO ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE
To preserve and enhance San Francisco’s unique architectural and cultural identity through advocacy, education, stewardship, and community-based preservation programs.
About SAN FRANCISCO ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE
San Francisco Architectural Heritage (operating as San Francisco Heritage or SF Heritage) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) preservation organization founded in 1971. Its work combines advocacy, education, and stewardship to protect the city’s historically and culturally significant buildings, places, and legacy businesses. SF Heritage owns and operates two landmark properties (including the Haas–Lilienthal House, a Queen Anne Victorian house museum) and runs city-facing programs such as walking tours, school Heritage Hikes, the Landmark Fund, and legacy-business advocacy. The organization maintains an active advocacy role at the local and state level and serves as a fiscal sponsor for community-led historic designation projects. The organization’s EIN (23-7135037) has been confirmed against the nonprofit’s own website and public tax filings; SF Heritage has remained an operating, donor-facing charity with a public web presence and regular program and advocacy activity in the last 2–3 years.
Notable achievements
Stewardship of the Haas–Lilienthal House
SF Heritage owns and operates the Haas–Lilienthal House, San Francisco’s notable Queen Anne house museum; after a temporary pause in late 2023, the organization resumed public access and programming in 2024, restoring museum tours and community events.
Landmark Fund and nominations program
Through the Landmark Fund and related grantmaking, SF Heritage has supported multiple nominations and designations (city, state, and federal) to expand the city’s inventory of protected buildings, legacy businesses, and historic districts.
Recent neighborhood advocacy and fiscal sponsorship
In the past two–three years SF Heritage has actively sponsored and supported neighborhood nomination efforts (including the Ingleside Terraces National Register effort), submitted formal recommendations for proposed historic districts, and intervened in local preservation cases such as advocacy to preserve historic theatres and storefronts.
