Through public education programs and exhibitions, restoration of its 1832 landmark building, and conservation of its original collections, the Museum tells the story of the domestic life of a wealthy merchant family and their four Irish servants in the mid-19th century, when the mercantile seaport of New York City emerged as a growing metropolis and the commercial emporium of America.

OLD MERCHANTS HOUSE OF NEW YORK INC (doing business as the Merchant’s House Museum) operates the Seabury Tredwell House, a restored 1832 late-Federal/Greek Revival rowhouse preserved as a historic house museum in Manhattan. The organization preserves and interprets the Tredwell family’s original furnishings and personal collections to illustrate domestic life in mid-19th-century New York.
The nonprofit is an active, donor-facing museum that runs guided and self-guided tours, public programs, lectures and exhibitions, and periodic conservation/restoration projects. In recent years the organization has completed interior restoration phases, developed new programming and community partnerships, and led an active preservation campaign to protect the landmark from potentially damaging adjacent development.
Notable achievements
National Historic Landmark & long-standing museum
The building was converted to a public museum in 1936 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966, establishing the organization as steward of one of New York City’s earliest landmarked buildings.
Preservation of the original Tredwell collection
The museum maintains and conserves the Tredwell family’s original collection (thousands of furniture, clothing, decorative arts and personal items), providing a rare intact example of a 19th‑century merchant household and primary-source material for interpretation and research.
Recent conservation and interpretive restorations
In the past several years the organization completed major, curator-driven interior restoration and re-interpretation work (including ground‑floor rooms) and has advanced preservation planning and fundraising to safeguard fragile ornamental plasterwork and other historic fabric.
