About Cutthroat Chapter, Trout Unlimited
Cutthroat Chapter (CCTU) is a volunteer chapter of Trout Unlimited focused on conserving, restoring and advocating for Colorado’s cold-water fisheries. It was formed in the early 1960s and is one of the oldest and largest TU chapters in Colorado.
The chapter runs hands-on habitat restoration, water-quality monitoring, and youth education programs and routinely partners with land managers and agencies on priority-waters projects. In the past 2–3 years CCTU has led trail-restoration work in Cheesman Canyon (Gill Trail), donated scientific equipment to state fisheries staff, and organized community plantings and river cleanups.
Notable achievements
eDNA Sampler Donation (2023)
Purchased and donated a compact eDNA sampling system to Colorado Parks & Wildlife in April 2023 to support broad-scale aquatic DNA monitoring efforts.
Gill Trail Restoration & Emergency Response
Spearheaded multi-year Gill Trail restoration planning and implementation; coordinated volunteer trail repairs and signage replacement after the July 31, 2023 flash flood that heavily damaged Cheesman Canyon access and created significant erosion.
Large-scale Riparian Planting (Earth Day 2023)
Organized and staffed an Earth Day 2023 planting at Bear Creek where volunteers planted over 1,000 native trees and shrubs as part of a multi-year partnership to improve riparian habitat.
