LITERACY MINNESOTA

Literacy Minnesota is a statewide nonprofit based in Saint Paul that provides adult basic education, English language instruction, digital literacy (Northstar), children & family literacy programs, volunteer training, and capacity-building services for literacy providers. The organization combines direct services (Open Door Learning Centers, free classes and family programs) with statewide training, curricula and technical assistance for educators and community partners. Founded in the early 1970s (previously known as the Minnesota Literacy Council), Literacy Minnesota operates statewide resources — including the Northstar Digital Literacy assessment, the English Unlocked curriculum, a referral hotline, and Summer Reads mentoring — and supports partner programs across Minnesota. In recent years the organization has published annual reports and continued to adapt programs for digital and distance learning; in March 2026 the organization implemented staffing reductions to address a budget shortfall while maintaining core programs and services.
