About PEOPLES FUND (Hawaiʻi People's Fund)
Peoples Fund (operating as Hawaiʻi People's Fund) is a Honolulu-based 501(c)(3) grantmaking organization founded in 1972 that supports grassroots progressive movement builders across the Hawaiian islands. The organization centers community-advised grantmaking and philanthropic practices that shift funding power to those working on the front lines in their communities.
HPF runs signature programs including community Giving Projects and an Urgent Action / Maui Aloha grant process created in response to the August 2023 Maui wildfires. In recent years the fund has continued core grant cycles while directing rapid-response grants and resources to impacted Native Hawaiian and other marginalized communities on Maui and throughout the state.
Notable achievements
Longstanding statewide grassroots funder
Founded in 1972, the organization has operated more than five decades as a dedicated local funder for grassroots social justice, maintaining an archive and multi-decade grantee portfolio that documents support for community-led movements across Hawaiʻi.
Maui Aloha rapid-response grantmaking
Following the August 2023 wildfires, HPF launched the Maui Aloha urgent-action grant process to provide immediate, flexible funding and support to frontline community groups; the program awarded multiple urgent-action grants and dozens of Maui-focused grants to grassroots organizations and mutual-aid efforts.
Pioneered community-advised Giving Projects
HPF runs the Giving Project model—an established community-advised, consensus-based grantmaking process—that engages cohorts of donors and community members in collective decision-making and distributed funding to grassroots groups.
