RIVERTON COMMUNITY HOUSING

Riverton Community Housing is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit that develops, owns, and manages cooperative apartment communities—many located near the University of Minnesota—operating on a resident‑governed, democratic model. The organization combines property ownership and cooperative governance to provide lower-cost, community-oriented housing to students and a broader mix of residents including new Americans, young workers, families, and lower-income households.

Riverton manages multiple co-ops (examples include Brook Avenue, Chateau, Cole Townhomes, Fourth Street, Franklin, Marcy Park, and Oliver & Wendell) and has used bond financing and acquisitions to expand its portfolio while maintaining affordability targets for most member households. In recent years Riverton published a 2020–2023 Impact Report, completed a rebrand, and implemented resident surveys and training to strengthen cooperative governance and resident services.

Riverton positions cooperative housing as a tool for economic and environmental sustainability: recent initiatives include rooftop solar installations, board development and resident leadership training, and redevelopment projects that replaced blighted sites with affordable cooperative units.
