About MARIN MUSEUM SOCIETY INC

Marin Museum Society Inc is the nonprofit organization that operates the Museum of the American Indian in Novato, California. The museum was founded in 1967 after archaeological finds in Miwok Park and is dedicated to preserving and sharing the living cultures, histories, and traditional ecological knowledge of Coast Miwok and other Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The organization runs rotating exhibits, a Contemporary Native Artists Gallery, hands-on workshops, school field trips, and community programs that center Indigenous voices and cultural practitioners. In recent years the museum has resumed and expanded educational programming (including a field-trip program that serves thousands of students annually), undertaken provenance and collections work in partnership with the Coast Miwok Tribal Council, and received operating support awards to strengthen exhibitions, youth programs, and organizational sustainability.

Notable achievements

Established stewardship of Coast Miwok collections

Founded in 1967 following excavations at Miwok Park, the organization has preserved, curated, and interpreted Coast Miwok and other Indigenous material culture for community education for more than five decades.

Large school outreach program

Maintains a robust field-trip and youth education program that historically serves roughly 4,000–5,000 schoolchildren annually, supporting state curricular objectives through place-based Indigenous history and TEK (traditional ecological knowledge) programming.

California Arts Council operating grant (2025–26)

Awarded General Operating Support to advance educational programming, collections work in collaboration with tribal partners, exhibitions featuring Indigenous artists, and organizational capacity-building.
