About JEFFERSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Founded in the early 1970s and currently operating under the public name Evergreen Mountain Area Historical Society (EMAHS), the organization collects, preserves, and interprets local history for Jefferson County, Colorado. It partners with Jefferson County Open Space to support and interpret the Hiwan Homestead Museum and maintains a public research library and regional collections.

EMAHS/JCHS is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that runs museum operations, K–12 education programs (including field trips and Medlen School Days), public exhibits, walking/history tours, and research services. In the past 2–3 years the society has continued public programming and partnered with county open-space staff on Hiwan Museum updates and volunteer-centered revitalization efforts.

Notable achievements

Hiwan Homestead preserved and interpreted

Played a central role in saving the Hiwan Homestead, securing its preservation through partnership with Jefferson County Open Space and supporting its interpretation as a public museum.

National Register recognitions

Helped secure National Register of Historic Places recognition for Hiwan Homestead (1974) and has stewarded other historic assets such as the restored Medlen one-room schoolhouse.

Sustained public collections & research access

Built and maintained a publicly accessible regional research library, digitized photo galleries, and oral-history resources that support ongoing community research and programming.
