Through preservation and education, Armand Bayou Nature Center strives to "Reconnect People with Nature." The mission of ABNC is twofold: (1) to preserve the habitats with which the organization has been entrusted; and (2) to provide opportunities for people to experience and understand the local ecosystem.

About Armand Bayou Nature Center Inc

Armand Bayou Nature Center (ABNC) is a large urban wilderness preserve and conservation nonprofit in the Houston/Pasadena, Texas area that protects coastal prairie, wetlands, marsh, and riparian forest habitat. The preserve encompasses over 4,000 acres and supports hundreds of native species, serving as both a conservation stronghold and a living outdoor classroom. ABNC operates hands-on environmental education programs (including bilingual offerings), field trips, camps, guided tours, and community events that serve children, teachers, families, and the broader public. The organization emphasizes habitat restoration, land acquisition, and public engagement to protect the Armand Bayou watershed and to connect local communities with nature. In 2024–2025 ABNC completed a major historic expansion and has since focused on large-scale restoration and watershed protection projects in partnership with county and regional funders, while maintaining active volunteer and education programs that directly involve community members in conservation work.

Historic 2024 Expansion

In its 50th anniversary year ABNC completed a major land acquisition (adding roughly 1,100–1,200 acres in partnership with local and corporate partners), increasing the preserve to more than 4,000 acres and expanding its capacity for habitat protection and restoration.

Significant Biodiversity & Habitat Protection

ABNC protects thousands of acres of coastal prairie, marsh, and forest and is home to 300+–370+ recorded species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and native plants, making it one of the largest and most biodiverse urban preserves in the region.

Robust Education & Volunteer Programs

ABNC operates extensive, TEKS-aligned field trips, bilingual youth programs, seasonal EcoCamps, outreach to schools and scout groups, and a volunteer corps (300+ volunteers) that supports restoration, stewardship, and visitor services.
