About DALLAS BAR FOUNDATION

The Dallas Bar Foundation (DBF) is the charitable arm of the Dallas Bar Association, organized as a 501(c)(3) in 1971. The Foundation focuses on expanding access to the legal profession and improving access to justice through scholarships (notably the Sarah T. Hughes Diversity Scholarship), paid summer clerkships for law students, grants to law-related nonprofit programs, and preservation of the Arts District Mansion. In the past 2–3 years DBF has continued regular scholarship selections, funded clerkships and community grants, and run signature fundraising events to support its programs; the organization maintains an active board of trustees and a public-facing website for scholarship, clerkship, and grant applications.

Notable achievements

Long-running Sarah T. Hughes Scholarship program

Since 1981 DBF has supported the Sarah T. Hughes Diversity Scholarship; by mid-2023 the Foundation had awarded more than 70 Hughes scholarships that have helped law students complete degrees and commit to practicing in the Dallas community.

More than $7 million awarded in grants and scholarships

As of 2023 the Foundation reported cumulative grants and scholarships awarded exceeding $7 million, including roughly $2.8–3.0 million directed to the Hughes scholarships and sustained funding for clerkships and youth legal-education programs.

Sustained financial stewardship and asset growth

DBF preserves the historic Arts District Mansion as part of its mission and reported net assets approaching or exceeding $10 million in recent filings, enabling multi-year scholarship commitments and continued grantmaking.
