About Historic Hawai‘i Foundation
Historic Hawai‘i Foundation is a statewide, membership-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1974 that advocates for the preservation of Hawai‘i’s historic buildings, sites, cultural landscapes and communities. The organization provides grants, technical assistance, education, advocacy, and hands-on stewardship programs to support preservation work across the islands. In recent years Historic Hawai‘i Foundation has been active in recovery and planning after the August 2023 Lahaina wildfires, launched and advanced a Native Hawaiian Organization Stewardship Program to support culturally grounded site stewardship, produced digital story maps (for example the Kōloa Story Map) and continued its long-standing Preservation Honor Awards program. Notable achievements
Native Hawaiian Organization Stewardship Program
Designed and launched a multi-year program to train and fund Native Hawaiian organizations to steward culturally significant sites; first partner projects and fieldwork began in the early 2020s and the program continues to expand.
Lāhainā Historic District recovery leadership
Played an active role in post‑wildfire assessment, stabilization planning and coordination with Lahaina Restoration Foundation, Hawai‘i State Historic Preservation Division and local governments following the August 2023 wildfires impacting the historic district.
Preservation Honor Awards (ongoing since 1975)
Operates Hawai‘i’s long-running Preservation Honor Awards program that recognizes outstanding preservation, rehabilitation and interpretation projects statewide, highlighting model projects and practitioners.
