About Age-Friendly Carbondale
Age-Friendly Carbondale is a volunteer-driven, tax-exempt nonprofit working to advance an age- and ability-friendly built and social environment in Carbondale, Colorado. The group uses the WHO/AARP Eight Domains of Livability to guide local planning and advocacy.
Formally active at the grassroots level since 2019, the organization connects residents, Town government and regional partners to address transportation safety, public spaces, housing, social participation and communication for older adults and people with disabilities.
Activities include public advocacy (notably efforts to improve safety along Highway 133), community education and events, and collaboration with municipal and state agencies to implement targeted accessibility and pedestrian-safety improvements.
Notable achievements
AARP/WHO Age-Friendly network connection
Established Carbondale’s participation in the AARP/WHO age-friendly community network and used that framework for local planning and outreach.
Pedestrian safety improvements
Helped advance installation of curb extensions, repaired dangerous sidewalks, added benches and worked with CDOT to install an audible crossing signal at a high-use intersection.
Public assemblies & local planning reports
Launched community assemblies and produced planning materials (including a 5-year strategic plan and reports used in trustee/policy discussions) to guide age-friendly actions.
