About MAMA HOPE

MAMA HOPE is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 2008, that partners with and invests in locally-led organizations primarily across East Africa. The organization was founded to fund community organizations directly and to shift power toward proximate leaders who design and run solutions for their communities.

MAMA HOPE’s core work centers on systems strengthening through its flagship Localization Development Accelerator (LDA), alongside social-enterprise impact investing, targeted grantee bootcamps, peer learning and advocacy. The organization emphasizes ethical storytelling and narrative change, including a published Language Bank and campaigns to reduce “pity-based” imagery in development communications.

In recent years MAMA HOPE has grown its programmatic reach: it launched the LDA (first announced in 2023), ran multiple cohort and bootcamp cycles, published annual reports and Form 990s, and reported strong interest in its LDA—receiving hundreds of applications for the 2025 cohort—while continuing to deliver webinars, in-person workshops, and micro-grant/investment support to participating locally-led organizations.

Notable achievements

Localization Development Accelerator (LDA) growth

Launched as the organization’s flagship program, the 9-month LDA provides cohort-based training, 1:1 coaching, in-person workshops and micro-grants to strengthen internal systems; the program attracted very high interest (hundreds of applications to the 2025 cohort).

Ethical storytelling and advocacy tools

Developed sector-facing resources and campaigns—including a Language Bank and #StopThePity advocacy—to change how donors and media describe and fund locally-led development.

Program delivery and partner bootcamps

Expanded practical capacity-building offerings (2–5 day grantee bootcamps, accelerator labs for social enterprises and LGBTQI+ organizations, webinars and alumni networking) to support sustainability and fundraising for early-stage, locally-led groups.
