Coal Creek Watershed Coalition
The mission of the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition is to maintain, restore and enhance the environmental integrity of Crested Butte's local watersheds to ensure those local watersheds and habitats are of the highest possible quality necessary to support wildlife, aquatic life, and human life.
About Coal Creek Watershed Coalition
Coal Creek Watershed Coalition (CCWC) is a community-based nonprofit (organized as a 501(c)(3)) founded in 2004 that works to protect, restore, and monitor the watersheds that drain to the Slate River and supply the Town of Crested Butte’s municipal water.
CCWC leads long-term water-quality monitoring, partners with federal and state agencies on mine-reclamation and watershed restoration projects (notably the Gossan Restoration Project), and provides technical support and public education to help inform local management decisions and protect aquatic and human uses. In recent years the organization has continued regular sampling and monitoring, advanced the Gossan restoration effort, and contributed to regional land-protection outcomes around Mt. Emmons/Red Lady.
Notable achievements
Support for Mt. Emmons land protections
Contributed to efforts that assisted with the Mt. Emmons (Red Lady) mineral withdrawal and land-exchange outcomes that protect the Red Lady area from new mining/development and secure long-term recreational use.
Revised Coal Creek water-quality standards
Participated in multi-party work that led to revised cadmium, copper, and zinc standards for lower Coal Creek to better protect existing uses and aquatic life.
Monitoring program redesign and expanded sampling
Updated monitoring protocols to optimize data collection and continued substantial sampling efforts in recent years to assess reclamation outcomes and track watershed condition.
