About FRIENDS OF UTOKYO INC
Friends of UTokyo, Inc. (FUTI) is a New York–registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, operated principally by alumni of the University of Tokyo to support education, research, and international exchange. The organization raises and administers scholarships and donor-funded awards that enable UTokyo students and alumni to study in the United States and U.S. students to engage with UTokyo programs. In recent years FUTI has expanded its scholarship offerings (adding mid- and long-term scholarship support beginning in 2022) and serves as administrator for several named scholarship funds. The organization maintains an active web presence, publishes annual reports, and files regular Form 990 returns, showing growth in contributions and net assets across the 2021–2025 period. FUTI is governed by an active board and advisory committee composed largely of UTokyo alumni and academic and professional leaders in the New York area, and it continues to partner with the University of Tokyo New York Office and corporate and individual donors to fund scholarships and exchange initiatives.
Notable achievements
Established, sustained named scholarship programs
FUTI administers multiple named scholarships (including the ITO FOUNDATION U.S.A.-FUTI Scholarship and the Hsun Kwei & Aiko Takizawa Chou Scholarship) and the Hisashi Kobayashi Memorial Fellowship, providing recurring awards that support student study-abroad and exchange between UTokyo and U.S. institutions.
Expanded scholarship portfolio to mid-/long-term awards
Beginning in 2022 FUTI broadened its support beyond short-term summer study to include mid- and long-term scholarship awards, increasing opportunities for UTokyo students and alumni to pursue extended study and degree programs in the United States.
Demonstrated financial growth and operational stability
Recent Form 990 filings and annual reports show rising contribution revenue and net asset growth across the 2021–2025 period, reflecting stronger fundraising and an increased capacity to fund scholarships and program activities.
