About FRIENDS OF THE FRONT RANGE WILDLIFE REFUGES (FFRWR)
Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges (FFRWR) is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed to support Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuges through fundraising, volunteer coordination, environmental education, habitat restoration, and public outreach.
FFRWR partners closely with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and community organizations to expand access to urban refuge experiences, build neighborhood relationships, and deliver programs for schools, families, and underserved communities; in recent years the group has led community art projects, youth engagement work, and capital campaigns such as a Nature Play project.
Notable achievements
Flagship Urban Refuge Partnership
Supported Rocky Mountain Arsenal’s designation and subsequent community-focused initiatives tied to its Flagship Urban Refuge status (program planning and neighborhood engagement began in 2021 and continued through subsequent years).
Walk for the Wild & Refuge Week Engagement
Hosted annual public events such as Walk for the Wild 5K and Urban Refuge Day activities (most recently run in October 2024) to raise awareness, foster community participation, and fund education and stewardship programs.
Community art and Nature Play campaign
Facilitated community art projects with Montbello students and local artists and launched a campaign to design and fund a Nature Play area at Rocky Mountain Arsenal, integrating neighborhood voices into refuge placemaking and youth access.
