HUI O KOOLAUPOKO
Protecting ocean health by restoring the ʻāina: mauka to makai.
About HUI O KOOLAUPOKO
Hui o Koʻolaupoko (HOK) is a community-based 501(c)(3) watershed management nonprofit founded in 2007 that works across the Koʻolaupoko region of Oʻahu (Makapuʻu to Kualoa) to improve water quality through ecosystem restoration, invasive species management, stormwater mitigation, and public education. HOK implements on-the-ground projects (native planting, invasive removal, rain gardens, low-impact retrofits) and technical assistance, and operates volunteer and education programs that engage residents, schools, and partner agencies. The organization reports sustained community engagement (over 20,000 volunteers and ~55,000 volunteer hours since 2009) and has acted as a local coordinator on urgent invasive-species responses in recent years. In 2023–2025 HOK expanded its role addressing the Oʻahu little fire ant threat—working as an on-the-ground liaison with residents, partner nonprofits, and government agencies—while continuing stormwater and watershed restoration projects such as residential rain garden programs, Windward Mall rain gardens, and other ecosystem restoration efforts in the Kailua/Waimanalo/Kāneʻohe Bay watersheds.
Notable achievements
EPA‑approved Watershed Plan (WRAS)
Developed and implemented the Koʻolaupoko Watershed Restoration Action Strategy (WRAS), an EPA‑aligned watershed plan carried forward from the Kailua Bay Advisory Council to guide restoration and stormwater projects in the Koʻolaupoko moku.
Large volunteer engagement
Mobilized community volunteers at scale—reporting over 20,000 volunteers and roughly 55,000 volunteer hours since 2009—supporting planting, invasive removal, monitoring, and educational outreach across multiple restoration sites.
Expanded invasive‑species response (Little Fire Ant)
Secured foundation support and expanded field and community outreach efforts in 2024–2025 to coordinate resident testing, public education, and partner responses to emergent little fire ant detections on Windward Oʻahu.
