TENANTS TOGETHER
Tenants Together is a statewide coalition of local tenant organizations dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of California tenants to safe, decent, and affordable housing. The organization builds tenant power through capacity-building, movement-building, and statewide advocacy and centers leadership of those most affected by displacement.
About TENANTS TOGETHER
Tenants Together is California’s statewide tenant-advocacy coalition (founded 2008) that connects and supports local tenant groups, provides training and legal referral resources, and conducts statewide legislative and public campaigns to protect renters. The organization operates a statewide tenant rights hotline and publishes know-your-rights materials, organizing toolkits, and policy reports to advance tenant protections and resist displacement. Tenants Together works in coalition with groups such as ACCE, PICO California, Homes for All and Housing NOW! and participates in legislative advocacy, research, and community capacity-building across urban, suburban, and rural regions of California.
Notable achievements
Statewide Tenant Hotline & Counseling
Operates a statewide tenant rights hotline and volunteer counselor training program that provides tenants with legal information, referrals, and organizing support; the hotline has been a core service since the organization’s early years and is central to its eviction-prevention and tenant-education work.
Coalition Research & Public Reporting
Co-authored and published a coalition report (May 2023) exposing large-scale real estate influence in California politics and mobilized partners to use the research in legislative and public campaigns to increase accountability and defend renter protections.
Statewide Movement & Capacity Building
Built and sustained a statewide network of local tenant organizations and running programs for tenant organizing, tenant-lawyer coordination, trainings, and technical assistance that have strengthened local tenant unions and city/county campaigns across California.
