About WATTS LEARNING CENTER INC
Watts Learning Center Inc. is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit that operates the Watts Learning Center K–8 charter schools and related community education programs. The organization emphasizes rigorous academics, social-emotional learning (SEL), family engagement, and 1:1 technology access to support whole-child development. Founded and led by Eugene and Sandra Fisher and chartered by LAUSD in 1997, WLC grew from a very small start to operating both an elementary and a middle charter school and sustaining long-term university and community partnerships. In the last 2–3 years WLC has continued school operations and programming (including literacy interventions such as Achieve3000, SEL supports and enrichment), published board meeting agendas and community notices on its active website (site updates through 2025–2026), and hosted events and partnership activities to support college and career awareness for students.
Notable achievements
Early inner‑city charter pioneer
Chartered by the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1997, Watts Learning Center was one of the earliest charter initiatives in South Los Angeles and established a model focused on high expectations and strong community ties.
Growth from grassroots to K–8 operations
Expanded from a two‑student initial enrollment to operate both an elementary and a middle school, sustaining multi‑year operations and a cohort of alumni while maintaining an emphasis on rigorous academics and enrichment.
Sustained programmatic partnerships and classroom innovation
In recent years WLC implemented literacy and digital learning tools (e.g., Achieve3000), strengthened SEL programming, and maintained partnerships with universities and community organizations to deliver events and mentoring that serve students and families.
