About Center for Racial Justice in Education, Inc.

Center for Racial Justice in Education (CRJE) is a Bronx-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2001 that provides professional development, coaching, and program partnerships to help schools and educational organizations disrupt racism and build equitable learning environments. CRJE works through cohort-based leadership programs, youth–adult partnership work, one-day and multi-session trainings, and ongoing organizational partnerships; in recent years it has run multi-month cohorts (for example the CARE leadership program) and arts-based youth-adult initiatives (the Baker-Butler program).

Notable achievements

Two decades of sustained work

Founded in 2001 (originally as Border Crossers) and rebranded in 2019, the organization celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022, marking longstanding service in anti-racist education and a strategic shift toward training educators and systems since 2010.

Widespread institutional partnerships

CRJE has built partnerships with a broad mix of public school systems, charter networks, independent schools, cultural institutions, and education organizations — including engagements with New York City education units and major museums and school networks — enabling program delivery at scale across multiple school contexts.

Ongoing cohort and youth programs

CRJE operates multi-session leadership cohorts (Community of Anti-Racist Educators — CARE) and the Baker-Butler youth–adult arts partnership program; recent cohorts (for example Spring 2024 CARE offerings) show continued program delivery and cohort-based professional learning activity.
